Idaho PFD Requirements
Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)
- The state of Idaho requires at least one U.S. Coast Guard approved Type IV
PFD (ring buoy OR seat cushion) on all recreational boats in excess of 16 feet
in length, in ADDITION to the wearable PFD required for each person onboard
all boats. Exceptions to this requirement include the following:
- Someone being towed behind a vessel is considered to be onboard.
- All PWC occupants must be wearing their PFD while underway.
- A water-skier being pulled by a vessel or a PWC must be wearing a PFD.
- Children 14 years of age and younger onboard vessels 19 feet or less must
wear a USCG Approved life jacket when the vessel is underway.
- Fly fishing float tubes are not required to meet the PFD regulations if operating
on lakes less than 200 surface acres.
- Fly fishing pontoons, sailboards, seaplanes and some racing boats are exempt
from the PFD laws & regulations; however it's never a bad idea to be wearing a
PFD while on the water.
Inflatable PFDs
Inflatable PFDs are available in Types II, III and V. It is important to note that inflatable
PFDs are not inherently buoyant and will not float without inflation. Though inflatable
PFDs are comfortable, they are not advised for children or individuals that cannot swim.
Regularly check and replace spent cartridges. Inflatable PFDs are not meant for
waterskiing, riding personal watercraft or whitewater paddling. An inflatable PFD
requires regular maintenance.
