This course is accepted by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and successful completion of all its components will allow you to meet the State?s education requirements and receive your Boating Safety Education Course Certificate.
The course itself is FREE. The course and end of chapter quizzes can all be completed at no cost; you will only be charged if you wish to obtain your Virginia Boating Safety Education Course Certificate (soon to be a requirement for all boaters in Virginia).
How the Course Works
The course itself is broken down into 7 manageable chapters, each covering a different aspect of boating safety.
Each of the chapters has a minimum required study time before you can access the chapter review quiz and chapters may only be completed sequentially. Each chapter is subsequently broken down into various topics which have been separated into a number of timed pages. The timer at the top of each page will let you know when you may proceed.
In total, 6 hours of study time will be needed before you will be able to obtain your Virginia Boating Safety Education Course Certificate. You will be credited for all the time spent completing the course; this includes study sessions, practice quizzes and chapter review quizzes.*
We will keep a record of your progress in your personal Exam Center as you log your study time and complete each end of chapter quiz.
The online course is convenient, and does NOT need to be completed all at once. You will not be able to print off your temporary Certificate or receive your Boating Safety Education Course Certificate until the 6 hours of required study time has been completed. You can log in and log out at any time, and pick up right where you left off!
*Up to 1 hour combined for the Chapter Review Quizzes and a maximum of 10 minutes per page, per session.
Practice Quizzes: Do I need to take them?
No, you don't NEED to take them. But we highly recommend it.
Once you have completed the minimum required study time for a particular chapter you will be directed back to your Exam Center. Here you will notice that you will be given 3 options; take a Practice Quiz, take the Chapter Review Quiz or Continue Studying. It is highly recommended that you take the Practice Quiz for each chapter at least once. The Practice Quizzes will allow you to make sure you have a solid working knowledge of the material before attempting the Chapter Review Quiz.
Remember, you will need a score of 90% on the Review Quizzes in order to pass, so the Practice Quizzes are great way for you to prepare. Not only are they great preparation, the time you spend taking the Practice Quizzes will also count towards your 6 hour minimum study requirement.
How the Chapter Review Quizzes work
As mentioned, at the end of each chapter you will need to pass a 10 question Chapter Review Quiz in order to proceed to the next chapter. You will be quizzed ONLY on the material contained in that particular chapter. Each question is made up of 4 multiple choice answer options which are accompanied by helpful visual aids, a valuable educational tool exclusive to BoaterExam.com.™
Every quiz is graded immediately and a passing grade of 90% or better is needed to proceed to the next chapter.
Important: If you are unsuccessful with one of the chapter quizzes (a score of less than 90%), you will be required to spend the minimum amount of time within that chapter again before you will be able to retake the quiz or proceed to the next chapter.
